The Instrumentation Integration and Testing Facility is a 31,000 sf expansion that delivers state-of-the-art laboratories and office space, centered around a colossal 30’×45’×35’ test tank engineered for rigorous remote-operated vehicles and underwater-equipment trials. Housed in a sleek two-story concrete structure with a concrete flat slab floor and a warm timber-truss roof, the building combines first-to-second-floor shear walls with a second-floor-to-roof ductile moment frame for superior seismic performance. The test tank extends 23 feet below the groundwater surface. R+C's structural and geotechnical engineers collaborated to design a soil-cement column foundation system that achieved all of MBARI’s performance objectives while also meeting critical cost objectives.
