San Francisco International Airport | On-Call Work

San Francisco, CA

Rutherford + Chekene has a 40-year history working with SFO. We have worked at every terminal at the airport, on the viaduct that connects the terminals, and on connections to AirTrain and BART. Our experience at Terminal 1 covers all aspects of the terminal and dates back to the 1980s, when we were engaged as the structural engineer of record for three concurrent Terminal 1 Modernization projects, including modifications to the main terminal building, insertion of a unique hinged 'bridge' structure between the pile-supported terminal building and shallow foundation-supported Boarding Area B, and the addition of the West Entrance Building, the airport’s former main entrance. In our current on-call structural engineering contract and in our role on the ATCT/T1 Redevelopment Master Architect contract, R+C has completed multiple projects at the Terminal 1 complex. Projects include development of the seismic design concept for the new Air Traffic Control Tower and Integrated Facilities building, performance of a structural conditions assessment of the terminal building and associated boarding areas, preparation of construction documents for a Boarding Area C Checkpoint Reconfiguration, and a study of build-back opportunities associated with demolition of the existing ATCT at Terminal 2.
