Structural Engineering
26,000 sf
LEED Platinum certified
The 26,000 sf Natural Sciences Building offers five high-tech classrooms, four teaching laboratories, a research laboratory and community space for interdisciplinary study. This center for scientific exploration brings the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology together into one educational community that encourages collaboration and research across disciplines. The building is LEED Platinum certified. Rutherford + Chekene provided structural engineering services.
Green Design
The building's sustainable design elements include recycled flooring, automatic sensors for light control, tall windows to increase the depth of natural light and decrease the use of artificial lights, energy-efficient glass windows, and rooftop PV panels that provide 30 percent of the building's electrical needs.
Leavening peerless structural engineering skill with humor, philosophy, people skills and, above all, a consummate understanding of San Francisco's permitting process, [Alan] saw this project through.
