Structural Engineering
245,000 sf
Highly condensed design schedule
LEED Silver certified
Rutherford + Chekene was the structural engineer for this new laboratory, situated on an urban, constrained site. The upper floors contain 245,000 sf of laboratory and office space, with 160,000 sf of parking beneath the building. The design uses buckling-restrained braced frames. The project was highly cost- and schedule-driven and required close collaboration between developer, contractor, and design team. The schedule for design required completion of the main structural package five months after the start of design. R+C also provided laboratory tenant improvement services for Amyris, Bayer, and the Joint BioEnergy Institute within the building.
Leavening peerless structural engineering skill with humor, philosophy, people skills and, above all, a consummate understanding of San Francisco's permitting process, [Alan] saw this project through.
