UC Berkeley Stanley Hall Laboratory
Berkeley, California
The new building consolidates research in biological and chemical engineering using nanofabrication, chemistry, biology, physics, and materials science. Located near the Hayward Fault, the 240,000 square foot building includes two levels of vibration-free research environments below ground and uses a buckling-restrained braced frame seismic system. The above-ground floors house research laboratories for chemical and theoretical studies, bioengineering and biophysics, structural biology, and other emerging disciplines. It also includes lecture halls and a multimedia/distance learning center. R&C was structural engineer for the project.
