Oakland International Airport Terminal 1 Retrofit
Oakland, California

R&C is designing the seismic retrofit of several existing Terminal 1 buildings at the Oakland International Airport. These buildings were found to be deficient in a seismic evaluation study previously carried out by us under a prime agreement with the Port of Oakland. The terminal building, the concessions/tower, the concourse, and the central utility plant are part of the original Terminal 1 complex constructed in 1959. These four concrete structures were evaluated using ASCE 31 provisions. Retrofit solutions are currently being developed using ASCE 41 provisions. R&C is working closely with the project team to achieve the airport’s goal of keeping the terminal and its supporting buildings fully operational throughout the construction process. In addition to the retrofit work, R&C is also performing structural engineering design for a new central utility plant and electrical substation.
