Mills College Betty Irene Moore Natural
Sciences Building
Oakland, California
The 26,000 square foot Natural Sciences Building offers five high-tech classrooms, four teaching laboratories, a research laboratory and community space for interdisciplinary study. This LEED Platinum center for scientific exploration brings together the fields of biology, chemistry, physics and psychology into one educational community that encourages collaboration and research across disciplines. Structural engineering for green systems included nonstructural design to brace rooftop photovoltaic panels and to support storm water recycling systems. Structural steel, which is comprised mostly of recycled material, was also used. R&C provided structural engineering services for the building.
