New de Young Museum
San Francisco, California

The New de Young Museum houses a multicultural art collection. The new three-story, steel-and-glass structure is arranged in three parallel bands. A nine-story tower serves as a landmark linking the museum to the city, and a soaring trellis cantilevers 62 feet from the building over an outdoor dining area. A base isolation and damping system protects the collection from earthquake damage. Green design applications included use of a 50 percent fly ash concrete mix and the re-use of steel from the previous building in the new foundation. R&C was responsible for structural, civil and geotechnical engineering for the museum.
