Aquarium of the Pacific
Long Beach, California
The new $50 million aquarium is located on the shore of Queensway Bay across from the Queen Mary ocean liner. A curved atrium and lobby—topped with a three-tiered, cascading wave-form steel roof—links the two-story concrete exhibit areas and steel-framed public spaces located on either side. The entire 108,000 square foot aquarium is supported by a raft foundation over a system of stone columns designed to prevent liquefaction of the underlying sandy soils. R&C provided structural engineering services.
