William Holmes

Bill has been with R&C for the past 45 years, nearly all of his career. He has worked on many new and renovation design projects, concentrating on healthcare. For the past 10 years, he has been primarily involved with research and development activities, both for the firm and for improvement of the profession.

He has been involved with research and development projects funded by FEMA, the Building Seismic Safety Council, and the National Institute for Standards and Technology. He also makes time for pro bono code development. His current involvements include development of performance-based seismic design, improvements of seismic protection of ceilings, partitions, and fire sprinkler systems, development of new design parameters for structural systems, and development of simplified seismic design provisions for zones of moderate seismicity.

Bill is active in many professional organizations, including the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering. He also serves on the board of directors of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California. In addition, he has traveled around the globe to speak at conferences and workshops and to consult with government officials concerning seismic design and mitigation policy.
