Marko Schotanus Named EERI Northern California Chapter Director

Marko Schotanus, P.E., Ph.D., was recently elected as Director of the Northern California Chapter. Marko is actively involved in EERI, serving as a leader in the San Francisco and Oakland soft-story sidewalk surveys that helped these cities qualitatively quantify their exposure to damage of high-density housing in earthquakes. He participated in the development of earthquakeretrofit.org, a community mapping project launched to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. The site addresses how the A/E/C community has reduced earthquake risk since Loma Prieta. Marko was also a member of the EERI Learning From Earthquakes reconnaissance team that was deployed to Italy after the April 6th L’Aquila earthquake.

In his leadership role within EERI, Marko aims to develop outreach initiatives to create public awareness of seismic risk. He also takes particular interest in activities that serve as a forum for building relationships between the various disciplines of earthquake engineering.
