Life Science
Rutherford & Chekene has completed extensive work for life science academic and research facilities. These include the new Li Ka-Shing Center for Biomedical & Health Sciences and the Stanley Hall Replacement Laboratory at UC Berkeley, as well as UCSF's Cardiovascular Research Institute and Genentech Hall at the Mission Bay campus. R&C has also provided structural engineering and geotechnical peer review for the J. David Gladstone Institutes, a nonprofit research organization with programs in cardiovascular disease, virology and immunology.

Healthcare
R&C's healthcare portfolio includes responsibility for over $1,500,000,000 in healthcare construction since 1991. Current commissions include the UCSF Mission Bay Hospital, the Mills Peninsula Hospital, California Pacific Medical Center Three Campus Expansion, Sutter General Hospital Sacramento, Kaiser Hospital Vallejo and Redwood City expansions, and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center MOB.

Our principals serve on the California Hospital Building Safety Board and the SB1953 Committee, which keeps the firm informed on the latest interpretations of the hospital code by OSHPD staff. Rutherford & Chekene has consistently ranked as OSHPD’s #1 or #2 Plan Check firm for their outsourced contracts since the program began in 1993.

Nanotechnology
R&C's work in the field of nanotechnology includes Stanley Hall at UC Berkeley, a 240,000 square-foot laboratory and research building that incorporates nanofabrication with science disciplines under the same roof. Other such laboratories include the California IT2 building at UC San Diego, and the Helios Energy Research Facility and the Molecular Foundry at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Sports
Rutherford & Chekene's structural department is providing Building Information Modeling and structural engineering for the Chico State Wildcat Activity Center, which includes a 300-foot gym connected to a two-story recreation center by an atrium containing a two-story climbing wall. R&C's geotechnical department is currently working on the City College of San Francisco Health & Wellness Center, which includes a gymnasium, pool and support facilities.

Museums & Aquariums
Rutherford & Chekene has a substantial portfolio of aquariums and mariculture facilities. Services provided range from structural peer reviews and conceptual designs for projects to our full engineering design for the aquariums in Monterey, San Francisco, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Alaska, London and Chicago. Recent projects include the New de Young Museum and work at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
