New de Young Museum, San Francisco, California
In order to protect the de Young Museum's extensive collection
of multicultural art, R&C's interdisciplinary team opted for
base isolation technology. The strategy also allows more daring
statements by the architects of the new museum, Herzog & de
Meuron.

The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts, Napa, California
R&C's civil and structural engineers provided a variety
of design services during the construction of Napa's American Center
for Wine, Food & the Arts. The Center houses a unique combination
of art galleries, visitor amenities and gourmet restaurants.

Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, California
Rutherford & Chekene has provided structural, civil and
geotechnical engineering services to the California Academy of Sciences
for over 15 years. Projects include seismic renovations, the renovation
of the Steinhart Aquarium and geotechnical services for the New
Academy project.

The
Exploratorium Relocation, San Francisco, California
Preparation of the new home for the children’s museum
along the waterfront includes the seismic retrofit of the historic
steel framed Pier 15 building as well as the concrete pier substructure,
both built in the ’30s. The project will provide approximately
200,000 sf of program space including a 50,000 sf new mezzanine
for exhibits, offices and museum support.

Turtle
Bay Museum and Arboretum, Redding, California
Located on the banks of the Sacramento River, the new museum
features exhibit spaces and visitor amenities focusing on the nature
and culture of the Shasta-Cascade region. With the help of Rutherford
& Chekene, the building was designed to reflect sustainable
design principles.

Aquarium
of the Pacific, Long Beach, California
The new $56 million aquarium is a cornerstone of the Long Beach
waterfront redevelopment. The building is constructed on a floating
raft, a method of soil stabilization that prevents the ground from
liquefying during seismic activity.

Bay Aquarium, Monterey, California
R&C provided structural, civil, geotechnical and life support
engineering for the construction of the award winning Monterey Bay
Aquarium. The project required the installation of two 350,000-gallon
seawater tanks and a one million gallon seawater tank.

Shedd
Aquarium Expansion, Chicago, Illinois
Renovation of the John Shedd Aquarium consisted of creating
two new exhibit areas—an Amazon rain forest exhibit and a
Philippines coral reef exhibit. Rutherford & Chekene designed
a major saltwater shark tank and several smaller exhibit tanks.
