UC Berkeley Wurster Hall Retrofit

Ferry Building, San Francisco, California
Built in 1896, this renovated landmark contains restaurants, retail shops and Class A office space. R&C provided structural engineering services for the retrofit of the structure, which is built entirely over piers in San Francisco Bay.

UC Berkeley Hearst Memorial Mining Building, Berkeley, California
Located just 500 feet from the Hayward fault, this historic building required extensive seismic upgrades. R&C's structural and geotechnical engineers provided designs for the project, which employs base isolation technology to allow for restoration of the historic building.

Hanna House, Stanford, California
Built in 1937 on the Stanford University campus, Hanna House has been hailed by the AIA as one of Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest contributions to American culture. R&C's structural and geotechnical team worked to rehabilitate the building, which was badly damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake.

UC Berkeley, South Hall, Berkeley, California
Built in 1873, South Hall is the oldest building in the University of California system. During its renovation, Rutherford & Chekene introduced reinforcing bars vertically into the brick masonry walls without changing the interior or exterior appearance of the historic building.

San Quentin State Prison Retrofits, California
R&C was prime contractor for the retrofit of several buildings on the prison campus. Challenges involved construction access and safety in the fully-operational, high security facility.

Stanford University Main Quad, Stanford, California
Renovation of the main quadrangle involved several original buildings on campus – the Geology Corner, the History Corner, the Language Corner, the Portals, and the Memorial Church. The project involved repairing Loma Prieta earthquake damage and seismically strengthening the unreinforced masonry buildings.

Berkeley Public Library, Berkeley, California
The project involved the seismic upgrade of an existing 37,500 sf building; the construction of a new, five-story, 70,000 sf addition; and a new three-story building on an adjacent lot. The original library is on the National Register of Historic Places. Special attention was given to preservation of the Art Deco building's exterior architectural elements, and the restoration of a 45-foot tall Reference and Reading Room.

The Cannery Mixed Use Center, San Francisco, California
The conversion of the Del Monte Fruit Cannery into a commercial complex was achieved using an innovative structural design concept that allowed for preservation of the original brick masonry.

U.S. Department of State, Overseas Buildings Operations, Worldwide
R&C provided structural and geotechnical engineering services for this extensive seismic upgrade program, involving sites as far ranging as Florence and Beijing. The work included feasibility studies and the evaluation of seismic zone classifications.

UC Berkeley Wurster Hall Retrofit, Berkeley, California
Built in 1964, Wurster Hall is a 150,000 sf three- and ten-story building housing the College of Environmental Design. Occupying a highly visible site on campus, the retrofit scheme minimizes changes to the existing exterior. Strengthened foundations use a 50% fly-ash concrete mix.
